  1. In the New Testament, Christian apostle and
  2. evangelist, whose name is given to the second
  3. Gospel. It was probably written AD 65-70, and
  4. used by the authors of the first and third
  5. Gospels. He is the patron saint of Venice,
  6. and his emblem is a winged lion; feast day 25
  7. Apr. His first name was John, and his mother,
  8. Mary, was one of the first Christians in
  9. Jerusalem. He was a cousin of Barnabas, and
  10. accompanied Barnabas and Paul on their first
  11. missionary journey. He was a fellow worker
  12. with Paul in Rome, and later became Peter's
  13. interpreter after Paul's death. According to
  14. tradition he was the founder of the Christian
  15. church in Alexandria, and St Jerome says that
  16. he died and was buried there.
